The Eastern Grey Squirrel free essay sample

Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Chordata Class: Mammalia Order: Rodentia Family: Sciuridae Genus: Sciurus The eastern gray squirrel, or Sciurus carolinesis, is from the eastern and midwestern United States, and also to the eastern provinces of Canada (Wildlife Profiles). As the name states the eastern gray squirrel has gray fur but it can also have reddish fur and in some very rare cases black fur. Its belly is white and it has a long bushy tail. The average size of one of these squirrels is about 18 oz and the length, including the long bushy tail, being 18 inches long (Animal Diversity Web). The eastern gray squirrel’s habitat consist of large areas of mature, dense woodland ecosystems. These forest that they live in usually contain large areas of vegetation so they are more able to feed the abundance of squirrels living there. The squirrels generally prefer making their dens in large tree branches and also within the hollow trunks of trees. The dens usually consist of moss plants, thistledown, dried grass, and feathers (Wildlife Management Guide). These are used to help insulate the den and keep everyone warm and away from the harsh environments. Close to humans, eastern gray squirrels are found in parks and backyards of houses within urban environments and in farmlands of rural environments (Wikipedia). Fruit and seeds provide for most of the squirrels diet. The squirrels most important food being the acorn that is produced by our many oak trees. Mushrooms are also a favorite (Animal Diversity Web). The eastern gray squirrel has been introduced to western North America, western Canada, South Africa, Ireland, and England (Wikipedia). Because of their mass population they have declined the population of red squirrels. A plan to help get rid of the squirrels in England is to have master chefs promote the idea of eating the squirrels (Wikipedia). Another plan that the U. S, has come up with is to burn some forest, Because that way it would burn the squirrels home and help some of the blue berry bushes to grow back (Wildlife Management Guide). What i think we should do as a proper way to regulate the squirrel population is do what we do with wild cats. With wild cats the USPCA will catch them and have them fixed so they are unable to reproduce. How we will do this is in over populated areas of squirrels we will set traps, mind you the traps should not harm the animals. And we will choose some females to be unable to reproduce. I believe this will dramatically reduce the squirrel population to a number we are all happy with.
